Hi,

I got a hardrive from an old videorecorder. Id showed not initialized in the Synology disc station and on PC. No way to format it and so on and so on. With the linux command hdprma it could be shown, that a password and security was set. I solved it with some help from the net and my gear at home, by reprogramming and hard format the disc over the service serial connector of the HDD. First I took a USB to serial converter with 3,3V and connected it to the HDD in the way shown in the picture.

Then I inserted a sheet of paper between the head contacts.

Then I followed the video documentation in the Link

The following codes were used:

Connect to serial with 38400 baud, 8, 1, N

switch on power of the HDD

press ctrl-Z in the terminal programm.

type /2 ENTER

wait for 20s

Type Z ENTER

Pull out the paper while leaving power on.

Type U ENTER

Type /1 ENTER

Type N1 ENTER

Power the HDD down, BUT NOT THE SERIAL.

wait 10s

Power on the HDD

press ctrl-Z

Type m0,2,2,0,0,0,0,22 ENTER

Type /1 ENTER

Type N1 ENTER

For me it was done with that, the HDD could be formated then and everthyng worked fine again.
